Perfectionism and ADHD
Purging our tendencies and what to do instead
I only realised over the last couple of years that I'm a hidden perfectionist. I had no idea!
If you looked at my messy desk, the coffee stain on my T-shirt and the state of my garage you wouldn't possibly think I was anywhere near being perfectionist. I didn't think so either.
I'm going to ask you a handful of questions and answer honestly!
- Do you ever avoid or postpone tasks where there's a risk you might fail?
- Are you more concerned about what you haven't achieved than what you have achieved?
- Do you harshly criticise yourself when you don't meet your standards?
- Do you judge your self-worth by the achievements or tasks you've completed?
- Do you ever discount your achievements because you feel you could have done better?
- Do you fear failure?
- Do you ever push yourself to the point of feeling depressed, overwhelmed or exhausted?
If you answered YES to any of the above, then I have news for you - you have perfectionist tendencies.
Don't get me wrong, some perfectionism is healthy. But the type us ADHDers often veer towards definitely isn't.
The consequences can be serious - health risks, burnout, damaged relationships. It's time we really got under the hood of this challenging topic.
