Access to Work:
A Step-by-Step Guide for Adult ADHDers
What is Access to Work?
Access to Work is a UK government scheme designed to provide financial assistance and practical support to individuals with disabilities or long-term health conditions, enabling them to secure and maintain employment or pursue self-employment opportunities.
Who is Eligible?
To be eligible for Access to Work, you must meet the following criteria:
Age: You must be 16 years of age or older.
Residency: You must live and work in England, Scotland, or Wales.
Employment Status: You must be currently employed, about to start a new job, or considering self-employment.
Condition: You must have a physical or mental health condition or disability that affects your ability to work effectively.
Support for Neurodivergent Individuals
If you have ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, or any other neurodivergent condition, you may qualify for an Access to Work grant. This grant can provide financial assistance of up to £66,000 per year to cover various forms of support, including:
ADHD Coaching
Access to Work can fund ADHD coaching sessions with a trained professional. These sessions can help you develop coping mechanisms, organizational skills, time management techniques, and other strategies to improve your performance at work.
Assistive Technology and Equipment
The grant can cover the costs of assistive technology and equipment that can aid individuals with ADHD or other neurodivergent conditions. This may include specialised software, apps, noise-canceling headphones, text readers, mind mapping tools, and other devices designed to enhance concentration, organisation, and productivity.
Travel and Transportation Support
If commuting or travel is a challenge due to your neurodivergent condition, Access to Work can provide support for transportation to and from work. This may include funding for public transportation or assistance in arranging suitable transportation options.
Mental Health Support
Individuals with ADHD or other neurodivergent conditions may sometimes experience mental health challenges. Access to Work can offer support in this area, such as access to counseling or other mental health services to help manage stress and anxiety.
Workplace Adaptations
If your neurodivergent condition requires specific workplace adaptations, such as a quieter workspace or flexible working hours, Access to Work can help negotiate these adjustments with your employer.
How to Apply
To access these services and more, you'll need to apply for Access to Work. The process typically involves the following steps:
Complete the Access to Work application form, providing detailed information about your condition, workplace needs, and the support you require.
Gather any relevant medical reports or documentation to support your application.
Discuss your application with an Access to Work advisor, who will assess your needs and determine the most suitable support.
If approved, Access to Work will work with you and your employer (if applicable) to implement the necessary support measures.
It's important to note that you or your employer may need to pay some costs upfront and claim them back later. Additionally, if you are self-employed, you can still apply for Access to Work.
